I did something weird a while back whilst visiting my hometown. For some reason I wanted to “mark” the town and acknowledge that it was on this patch of land in my sad-weirdo childhood bedroom that I first discovered and was emotionally rescued by pop music. And so I took one of my old 45 adaptors and placed it behind a fence near where I used walk to school many decades ago. Yes, it’s a weird, nonsensical gesture, not to mention non biodegradable. But I liked that there was some small acknowledgement of that musically obsessed squirt listening to records in her 20th century blue shag rugged room on that particular patch of land. I also liked the idea of someone noticing it and thinking “how the f*ck did that get there?” ( well, at least the people who actually knew what it was, I acknowledge that it is a prehistoric artifact at this point). I’m sure it’s at least a foot underground by now, having been pounded by the elements for the past year and is now mingling with the dirt and weeds, relieved at never again having to be forcibly plugged into stuff like “Broken Wings” and “The Candy Man”.You’re free now pal, rest in peace.
